A Saturday afternoon youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, turned to tragedy when a truck drove through the playing field, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, and injuring ten others. The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the Stryker Sports Complex, a city facility featuring eleven turf fields.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, was taken into custody at the scene. Police have not yet determined whether the incident was intentional. At an evening news conference, Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses reported that the driver has been cooperative with investigators thus far.

Both deceased victims were residents of McPherson, Kansas, though they were not related to one another. The injured include five children between the ages of 5 and 9, as well as five adults ranging from 28 to 68 years of age. According to Captain Moses, the injuries vary considerably in severity, from minor bruises to extremely serious trauma, though all are believed to be non-life-threatening at this time. An additional patient, a 61-year-old woman, required hospitalization for non-traumatic medical issues related to the incident.

When first responders arrived, they discovered the two fatalities at the scene and witnessed community members already rendering aid to the injured. The driver remained in the truck with two children. Police have indicated that one of the woman’s children had a game scheduled at the complex, though at a different field from where the collision occurred.

Multiple emergency services responded to the incident, including Kansas Highway Patrol officers, Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputies, and police from nearby Bel Aire. The coordinated response reflects the gravity of the situation and the resources required to manage such a catastrophic event.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed her grief over the incident, stating she was heartbroken by the tragedy. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued a statement indicating she is monitoring the situation and has offered state resources to the city. The governor extended her condolences to the families of the victims and survivors while expressing gratitude to first responders.

The Stryker Sports Complex has canceled all scheduled events for the time being. The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced the suspension of its flag football state championship and all other matches scheduled through the weekend.

The investigation remains ongoing. The Wichita Police Department has requested that anyone who captured video of the incident submit it to assist investigators in piecing together the sequence of events.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly ordinary life can be interrupted by tragedy. As authorities work to determine what led to this devastating event, a community mourns the loss of two lives and prays for the recovery of those injured.
