President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in the ceremonial opening of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington on Sunday, taking an honorary lap around the track before waving the green flag to begin the race.
The presidential motorcade circled the 1.7-mile street course in the presidential limousine known as the Beast, drawing cheers from spectators gathered along the route. The track, which winds past the U.S. Capitol and around the National Mall, represents one of the most ambitious racing venues ever constructed in the American capital.
Before the race commenced at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, the president met with drivers on the grid, offering words of encouragement and well-wishes. When asked what he was most anticipating about his first IndyCar race, President Trump expressed concern for safety above all else.
“Just that everyone’s safe and they have a good time,” the president said. “I want everyone to be safe. I want everyone to have a good time.”
He indicated he had told the drivers to have fun and wished them good luck.
The race marks a centerpiece event in the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, bringing both the IndyCar series and the revived International Race of Champions series to the nation’s capital for a full weekend of competition. The 147-lap race around the National Mall offers what organizers promised would be one of the premier spectacles in American motorsports.
Álex Palou secured the pole position for the race, entering the event as the points leader in the 2026 IndyCar season. With six victories already recorded this year, Palou holds a commanding 133-point advantage over Kyle Kirkwood and a 137-point lead over David Malukas in the championship standings.
Palou, who attended the unveiling of the track course earlier this year, reflected on the significance of racing in such a historic location. He described his visit to the White House and the Oval Office in deeply personal terms.
“Incredible,” Palou said. “Honestly, that’s the only word that comes to mind. I remember the visit we did a month ago when I got invited to the White House. I was like, ‘Really? For real?’ I was going to be able to go inside and just see how the Oval Office is, and just knowing the history that it has.”
The Spanish driver acknowledged his immigrant status while expressing gratitude for the opportunities America has provided him in his racing career.
The Freedom 250 represents an unprecedented logistical achievement, transforming the heart of the federal district into a high-speed racing circuit. Final preparations for the event took weeks, requiring extensive coordination between race organizers, federal authorities, and local officials to ensure both the safety and success of the competition.
