President Donald Trump delivered an unequivocal defense of artificial intelligence development during a telephone call with Nvidia Corporation Chief Executive Jensen Huang on Monday, dismissing widespread safety concerns about the rapidly advancing technology as a “hoax.”
The president’s remarks, made during the All-In Summit where Huang placed the call on speakerphone, represent a sharp departure from growing alarm within the technology sector about potential risks associated with artificial intelligence advancement.
“The robots will not be taking over. The AI will not be taking over the rest of the world. The whole thing is a hoax,” Trump stated during the call. The president suggested that critics of unfettered AI development are “just playing right into the hands of a lot of people that don’t want to see it happen. That could be political people, that could also be China.”
The conversation centered on America’s competitive position in the global technology race, with Trump emphasizing the imperative of maintaining supremacy over Chinese efforts in artificial intelligence innovation and development.
Trump praised data centers, installations that have generated considerable public opposition in various communities, calling them “great” and crediting them with generating wealth for people and states. The president compared artificial intelligence to a natural resource of extraordinary value.
“It’s the oil of the next 20, 25 years, it’s bigger than the internet and AI, you know, much more so,” Trump said, though he added that people “have to be a little careful” and proceed “prudently.”
Huang, whose company manufactures the advanced chips and hardware that power artificial intelligence systems worldwide, expressed alignment with the president’s position. “We’re going to make sure that everybody wins in the AI race in America. Every industry, every company, every state, every people,” the Nvidia chief told Trump.
The president’s forceful stance comes at a moment of heightened debate within the technology industry about appropriate safeguards. Several prominent figures have recently called for more cautious approaches to AI advancement.
Over the weekend, Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei published an essay advocating for stronger safeguards in artificial intelligence development. The position quickly garnered support from Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk and OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman, among other industry leaders.
These calls for restraint followed the departure last week of researchers from leading artificial intelligence companies who cited safety concerns. Some of these former employees have characterized the risks as potentially existential threats to humanity.
Trump rejected such warnings in multiple statements Monday, describing artificial intelligence concerns as a “SICK conspiracy” and reiterating his characterization of safety warnings as a hoax.
Huang serves on the president’s council of science and technology advisers. He has previously advocated for permitting Nvidia sales globally, a position that has drawn criticism from lawmakers who contend such policies could benefit China and diminish American technological leadership.
The Nvidia executive previously intervened with the administration last year regarding National Guard deployment to San Francisco, successfully persuading Trump against sending troops to the city.
Former President Barack Obama urged Democrats last week to prioritize development of an artificial intelligence agenda, indicating the technology’s growing prominence in national policy discussions.
The exchange between Trump and Huang underscores the administration’s commitment to rapid artificial intelligence advancement, even as voices within the technology sector itself express reservations about proceeding without additional safeguards. The debate reflects fundamental questions about how America should approach this transformative technology while maintaining its competitive edge against international rivals.
