A domestic disturbance in Sandy, Oregon, escalated into deadly violence Sunday afternoon, leaving multiple people dead and one police officer wounded by gunfire. The suspect surrendered to authorities hours later, bringing an end to an incident that shook this small community east of Portland.

Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey confirmed that officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance and shooting at approximately 4 p.m. Pacific Time. Upon arrival, officers encountered gunfire and returned fire in what became a protracted and dangerous confrontation.

During the exchange, one officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and required evacuation by Life Flight helicopter. Chief Huskey reported the wounded officer’s condition as stable, with expectations for a full recovery. The officer’s identity has not been released pending notification of family members.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered multiple fatalities. Chief Huskey declined to specify the exact number of victims or provide details about their identities, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. The circumstances surrounding the domestic dispute that precipitated the violence remain unclear at this time.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, established a perimeter and issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the southeastern section of Sandy. The order remained in effect for several hours as officers worked to locate and contain the suspect.

At approximately 8 p.m., four hours after the initial incident, the suspect surrendered to law enforcement without further incident. Chief Huskey noted that the suspect was unharmed and taken into custody peacefully. Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or potential charges at this time.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted following the arrest, and Chief Huskey assured residents that no ongoing threat to the community exists. However, the investigation remains active, with the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team processing the scene and conducting interviews.

“I understand everyone wants answers and information right now, but this remains a very dynamic and active investigation,” Chief Huskey stated. “I can tell you that investigators from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team are working to process the scene, conduct interviews, and to get the answers our community deserves.”

The police chief acknowledged the profound impact of the tragedy on Sandy, a city of approximately 12,000 residents located roughly 27 miles east of Portland at the base of Mount Hood.

“This is a traumatic event for our community and the Sandy Police Department,” Huskey said. “I know many people are grieving. I ask everyone in our community to keep the victims, our injured officer, their families, friends, and all of the first responders in their thoughts tonight.”

As investigators continue their work, many questions remain unanswered about what transpired during those critical hours Sunday afternoon. The community of Sandy now faces the difficult task of processing this tragedy while awaiting further details from authorities about the circumstances that led to such devastating loss of life.
