Former President Joe Biden’s battle with prostate cancer has entered a more serious phase, with the disease now having spread to his bones, according to his son Hunter Biden in a recent interview.
Speaking with considerable emotion, Hunter Biden described his father’s condition as “very painful” and “very debilitating in many respects.” The younger Biden told reporters that “the cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” painting a difficult picture of the 83-year-old former president’s current health status.
The former president first revealed his cancer diagnosis in May of last year, approximately four months after departing the White House. Medical records indicated he received a Gleason score of 9, placing him in Grade Group 5, which represents the most severe category for prostate cancer.
Since the initial diagnosis, Biden has undergone multiple treatments. Last September, he had surgery for skin cancer using a procedure that removes thin layers of skin until only cancer-free tissue remains. The following month, in October, his office confirmed he had begun radiation therapy for the prostate cancer.
Former First Lady Jill Biden addressed the diagnosis earlier this year, describing the family’s reaction as one of shock. She revealed that the cancer was not detected during the president’s time in office, noting that medical guidelines from the American Urological Association do not recommend PSA blood tests for men over 70, as prostate cancer typically grows slowly in that age group. “I do feel we had amazing care in the White House, but somehow that was missed,” she stated.
Hunter Biden expressed frustration with his father’s stoic approach to the illness. “It’s really sad to watch,” he said. “The only thing that I’d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good.”
Despite the advancing illness and its painful effects, the former president continues to engage with public affairs. “He’s still doing his thing,” Hunter Biden observed. “He so believes in this country.”
Joe Biden’s age was a persistent concern throughout his presidency, as he became the oldest person to serve in that office. Questions about his physical and mental fitness intensified during his final year in office, culminating in his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race following a widely criticized debate performance against then-candidate Donald Trump.
The Biden family and White House staff have faced significant criticism for allegedly concealing the full extent of the president’s health challenges during his time in office. These concerns have only grown more pronounced in light of the current revelations about his cancer’s progression.
The former president plans to publish a memoir titled “Promise Me, America” following the upcoming midterm elections, suggesting he intends to remain active in public discourse despite his health challenges.
