Florida Mother Arrested After Leaving Four Children Alone for Bahamas Cruise

A troubling case of alleged child endangerment has emerged from South Florida, where authorities arrested a 29-year-old mother after she reportedly left her four young children unattended to embark on a three-day cruise vacation to the Bahamas.

Nathalie Belizaire of North Miami Beach now faces four counts of felony child neglect after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained her Monday as she disembarked from Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Conquest. The children she allegedly left behind range in age from two months to their early teens.

The case came to light when police discovered the children Saturday evening, one day after the cruise ship had departed. Bodycam footage from the North Miami Beach Police Department captured the moment officers found all four children hiding together in a bathroom. The video shows a teenage girl emerging while holding a two-month-old infant, followed by what appears to be a pre-teen child and a two-year-old toddler.

The circumstances leading to the discovery reveal a pattern of deception. According to police reports, Belizaire told Lether Bazile, the father of her infant daughter, that she would be leaving the children with their great-grandmother. However, the children’s grandmother, Denise Wilkes, later informed officers that while Belizaire had promised to bring the children to her residence, she never arrived.

Bazile became suspicious after viewing what appeared to be a Carnival Cruise Line ticket on Belizaire’s WhatsApp story two days before the children were found. When he visited Belizaire’s home to investigate, he noticed the television flickering through the window blinds and heard the children’s voices inside. He immediately contacted authorities.

Police also learned that Belizaire’s brother, Steven Borgella, received a text message from his sister at 8 p.m. on the evening the children were discovered, requesting that he check on them. This communication occurred while Belizaire was already aboard the cruise ship.

During her arraignment Tuesday, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer expressed disbelief at the circumstances of the case. The judge rejected defense arguments and emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the community should be grateful nothing more serious occurred.

“You cannot make this up,” Judge Glazer stated from the bench. “Who leaves four little kids alone to go on a cruise? The poor kids were home alone.”

The case raises serious questions about parental responsibility and the vulnerability of children left without proper supervision. The infant was merely two months old, an age requiring constant care and attention. The fact that all four children were found hiding together in a bathroom suggests they may have been frightened or aware that their situation was abnormal.

Authorities have not disclosed how long the children were alone before being discovered, though the timeline suggests it could have been as long as 24 hours or more. Child welfare officials are now involved in determining the appropriate placement for the children while the case proceeds through the criminal justice system.

Belizaire remains in custody as she faces the serious felony charges that could result in substantial prison time if convicted.
