A senseless act of violence has claimed the life of a Pittsburgh pediatrician and left his wife fighting for her life after an intruder attacked the couple as they slept in their home early Thursday morning.
Dr. Idris Evans, a 46-year-old pediatric critical care physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital with multiple stab wounds. His wife remains in critical condition following the attack, which occurred shortly after midnight in the Pittsburgh suburb of Edgewood.
Allegheny County police officers responding to the scene found both victims suffering from severe injuries. During a subsequent search of the area, detectives located Elijah Hemingway, 32, hiding behind a nearby residence. The suspect had lacerations on his hand and was detained before being transported to a hospital for treatment.
According to the criminal complaint, Evans’ wife provided authorities with a harrowing account of the attack. She told investigators that she and her husband awakened to find a man stabbing them with a kitchen knife. The assailant, whom she described as appearing psychotic and wearing only underwear, repeatedly made utterances about God and being God during the assault.
The nature of the attack raises profound questions about both the suspect’s mental state and whether any prior connection existed between the parties. Allegheny County Assistant Police Superintendent Victor Joseph stated that investigators are examining whether Evans and Hemingway knew each other. The victim’s wife reported hearing her husband say the name Elijah during the struggle, though authorities remain uncertain whether the attacker identified himself or if the doctor recognized him.
What is certain is the courage displayed by the victims in their final moments together. Evans’ wife indicated that both she and her husband fought back against their assailant as best they could. With remarkable presence of mind amid the chaos, she managed to yell for their children, ages 8 and 12, to flee to a neighbor’s house. Both children escaped unharmed.
The suspect reportedly demanded the wife’s car keys, which she provided. Despite suffering multiple stab wounds herself, she managed to run to a neighbor’s residence to call for help.
Police discovered Dr. Evans on the floor of the third-story bedroom with multiple severe stab wounds and lacerations to his trunk. The bedroom was in disarray, with items knocked over and a large amount of blood on the floor and walls. A large kitchen knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from the third-story bathroom. The back door was found open with blood on the handle, and an open kitchen window with blood at its base suggested the suspect’s point of entry.
Hemingway faces charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, criminal trespass, and possessing instruments of crime. He is currently awaiting a preliminary hearing.
This tragedy has taken from the community a dedicated physician who devoted his career to saving the lives of critically ill children. The investigation continues.
