Chicago police are investigating an alleged sexual assault that occurred early Sunday morning at a fraternity house near the University of Chicago campus in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
According to authorities, a 21-year-old woman reported that a male sexually assaulted her inside a residence during a party at approximately 2 a.m. The woman transported herself to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment. Area One detectives have taken over the investigation, though police have not released additional details at this time.
The University of Chicago issued a security alert confirming that the incident took place at a fraternity house during a social gathering. The institution is cooperating with local law enforcement as the investigation proceeds.
Alpha Epsilon Pi, the fraternity involved, released a comprehensive statement Sunday afternoon addressing the alleged incident. The organization’s headquarters indicated it learned of the matter that day and has been working directly with chapter leadership since being notified.
The fraternity announced immediate measures in response to the allegation. Chapter leaders have been instructed to suspend all events and programs pending the outcome of the investigation. The organization stated it is working cooperatively with both university administration and law enforcement officials.
In its statement, Alpha Epsilon Pi emphasized its foundational principles as a Jewish fraternity, noting that its teachings stress the inherent dignity of all human beings. The organization explicitly condemned sexual assault and harassment, stating that its membership conditions absolutely prohibit such conduct, including repeated propositioning, coercive pressure, unwanted touching, and physical violence.
The fraternity outlined its existing safeguards, including mandatory training for all members on appropriate conduct standards. These standards are reinforced through chapter visits and national and regional events. Violations of these policies can result in expulsion from the organization.
Alpha Epsilon Pi called attention to one of its central principles, describing members as their “Brothers’ Keepers” with a responsibility to protect each other, guests, and the broader community at all times.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the allegation, the fraternity urged restraint in drawing conclusions before the investigation concludes. The organization requested that media outlets and the public allow the investigative process to run its course.
The statement concluded with an expression of concern for the alleged victim, emphasizing that no one should attend any campus event and fear for their safety and well-being.
This investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced any arrests or charges at this time. The case underscores continuing concerns about campus safety and the conduct of Greek life organizations at universities across the nation.
