Donald Trump, the president-elect, wants to end daylight savings time.

In a Friday post on his Facebook page, Trump stated that his party will try to stop the practice once he returns to his office.

The Republican Party is going to do everything it can to get rid of Daylight Savings Time. It has a strong but small constituency. But they shouldn’t. He wrote that Daylight Saving Time was inconvenient and costly for our nation.

The purpose of setting the clocks one hour forward in the spring, and backward an hour in fall is to maximize the amount of daylight in summer. However, this practice has been under scrutiny for many years. In 1942, daylight saving time was adopted as a measure to combat the war effort.

Lawmakers have occasionally proposed getting rid of the time change altogether. The most prominent recent attempt, a now-stalled bipartisan bill named the Sunshine Protection Act, had proposed making daylight saving time permanent.

The bill was sponsored by Florida Senator Marco Rubio. Trump has appointed Rubio to head the State Department.

The Senate approved the measure after Republican Senator Rick Scott from Florida stated that the change of time twice a year was outdated and unnecessary.

Health experts have stated that the lawmakers are backward and that standard time needs to be permanent.

Some health groups including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and others have stated that standard time is better aligned with the sun and human biology.

The majority of countries do not observe daylight savings time. The date on which clocks are switched varies in countries that observe daylight saving time.

Arizona and Hawaii do not change their clocks.
