Four people were killed Thursday afternoon when a teenage gunman forced his way into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, in an attack that was brought to an end by an armed civilian who pursued the shooter into the building and fatally shot him.
The victims included one teacher and three children ages 5, 8, and 11, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz. Two others, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, sustained critical injuries and were transported to St. Charles Medical Center. Authorities have not yet released the names of any victims.
The sequence of events began shortly before 1 p.m. when emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from an individual reporting that they had been shot at multiple times while in their vehicle by a suspect armed with a long gun. Within moments, dozens of additional 911 calls flooded the emergency lines as the 16-year-old male suspect entered the school grounds.
Chief Krantz reported that the shooter gained entry to the building by firing at locked doors. When officers arrived at the scene within three minutes of the initial emergency call, they discovered that a community member had already neutralized the threat.
“An officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” Krantz stated during a press conference Thursday evening.
Upon entering the building, responding officers discovered four deceased victims. The wounded survivors were quickly evacuated for medical treatment.
Law enforcement sources have indicated that the weapon used in the attack was a pump-action shotgun, reportedly purchased by the suspect’s mother. Officials declined to confirm the specific type of weapon or the number of rounds fired during the incident. No motive has been established, and police could not confirm whether the teenage suspect had any connection to Silver Rail Elementary School.
The identity and background of the citizen who stopped the attack have not been disclosed by authorities.
All students and staff were evacuated from the school and transported to a nearby church, where they were reunited with their families.
“Today an unthinkable tragedy happened at Silver Rail Elementary School,” said Bend-La Pine Superintendent Steven Cook. “No community should have to do what we are doing right now. I don’t have any words for what this community is feeling right now.”
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek acknowledged the actions of the armed civilian who intervened, stating that the individual “heroically intervened to stop further loss of life,” while noting that such actions carry “a heavy emotional burden.”
“All Oregonians mourn this loss today,” Kotek said. “This is a horrible day. No parent should have to have this kind of day. And no community should have to live through this kind of day.”
Multiple federal agencies responded to assist local authorities, including field agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The Oregon State Police also participated in the investigation.
The investigation into the shooting remains active and ongoing. Bend-La Pine Schools confirmed that all schools in the district would be closed as the community processes this tragedy.
