Police records obtained this week reveal troubling details surrounding pop singer Britney Spears’ arrest for driving under the influence on a California highway this past March, painting a picture of a celebrity struggling with substance abuse and erratic behavior behind the wheel.
According to the investigation report, California Highway Patrol officers observed Spears drifting between lanes on U.S. Route 101 before initiating a traffic stop. The situation quickly escalated when the driver took fifteen seconds to respond to commands to pull over, raising immediate concerns among the responding officers.
When Spears finally rolled down her window, the reporting officer documented “the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from” the vehicle. What followed was a ten-minute argument before the singer would exit her car, with dashboard camera footage capturing her resistance to basic police instructions.
The footage reveals Spears expressing concern about exiting her vehicle due to highway traffic. When officers offered to relocate to a safer position around a corner, she declined and instead made an unusual request for the officers to follow her home. “I’ll make you food or lasagna, whatever you want. I have a pool,” Spears can be heard saying in the recording. She insisted repeatedly that she was “totally fine” and capable of driving.
Upon exiting the vehicle, officers observed visible signs of impairment. The reporting officer noted that Spears appeared unsteady on her feet and exhibited “rapid and slurred” speech. The report also documents “dramatic mood swings” during the interaction and notes that she occasionally spoke with a British accent.
Spears told officers she had consumed a mimosa approximately six hours before the traffic stop and maintained she felt no intoxication. “I could probably drink four bottles of wine and take care of you. I’m an angel,” she told the officer, according to the report. She also disclosed taking Lamictal, a medication commonly prescribed for bipolar disorder.
A search of the vehicle yielded additional concerns. Officers discovered a bottle of Adderall not prescribed to Spears and a wine glass in the front cupholder. These findings led to her arrest on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Two Breathalyzer examinations administered approximately one hour after the initial stop registered blood alcohol levels of 0.06 percent and 0.05 percent, both below California’s legal limit of 0.08 percent for drivers over twenty-one. Blood samples were also collected for drug testing, though those results were not included in the available report.
Spears was released the morning following her arrest. Earlier this month, she entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of reckless driving. The court sentenced her to twelve months of probation, allowing her to avoid jail time.
A representative for Spears characterized the incident as “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable” in a statement. In April, approximately one month after the arrest, Spears voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility, according to her spokesperson.
The case serves as another chapter in the complicated public life of the entertainer, whose personal struggles have been well-documented over the past several years. The legal proceedings have now concluded with probation, though the broader questions about her well-being remain a matter of public concern.
