A Pennsylvania State University student lost his life early Saturday morning after confronting an armed robber who had stolen his cellphone in Philadelphia.

Billy Schmidt, 22, was shot in the chest during an armed robbery attempt near his residence at approximately 1:30 a.m. Philadelphia Police Department officers arrived to find the young man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m.

Surveillance footage from the incident captured the tragic sequence of events. The video shows Schmidt demanding the return of his property, stating “Give me my phone,” moments before a gunshot rang out. Additional security camera footage reveals a suspect throwing a cellphone before another individual can be seen fleeing around a corner, pursued by Schmidt. The confrontation ended with the fatal shooting.

The victim’s father, Bill Schmidt, explained that his son had been returning home from a bar where he had been watching the NBA Finals with friends. The elder Schmidt expressed both grief and surprise at the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.

“He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul, never bothered anyone and for him to get shot like that is a travesty,” Bill Schmidt said. “I’m shocked when they stole his phone that he chased them.”

Billy Schmidt’s sister, Anna, spoke with reporters about the devastating loss of her brother. “I miss him so much, and I don’t understand how someone can do this,” she said.

The young man was a senior at Penn State, studying journalism through Penn State World Campus. He had been on track to graduate in December, just months away from completing his degree and beginning his career.

Penn State University released a statement acknowledging the tragedy. “We are heartbroken over the tragic death of William Schmidt and we share our deepest condolences with his family and friends,” the university said.

The incident represents yet another troubling example of violent crime in Philadelphia, where confrontations during property crimes have increasingly turned deadly. The case remains under investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department.

This senseless act of violence has robbed a family of their son and brother, cut short the promising future of a soon-to-be college graduate, and left a community mourning a young man described by those who knew him as someone who cared deeply for others and never caused harm to anyone.

The investigation continues as authorities work to identify and apprehend those responsible for this fatal shooting.
