After an extensive month-long search, authorities have confirmed the discovery of Grant Gardner’s remains in Wyoming’s Bighorn National Forest. The Minnesota hiker had embarked on what was intended to be a three-day expedition in late July.
Gardner’s last known contact was with his wife on July 29th. He reported successfully reaching the summit of Cloud Peak, the highest point in the Bighorn range, standing at approximately 13,000 feet. The timing of this achievement, around 7 p.m., raised immediate concerns among officials due to the treacherous terrain that would need to be navigated after nightfall.
The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office reports that a professional climbing team from North Carolina made a crucial discovery on Tuesday. While establishing a high-altitude camp, they spotted what appeared to be a backpack several hundred feet above their position. Due to the approaching darkness, further investigation was deemed too dangerous at that time.

On Wednesday, search teams located Gardner’s remains near the backpack. The body was found in an area that closely matched one of the highest probability scenarios outlined by search coordinators. It’s worth noting that this region had been previously surveyed by air and other means, underscoring the challenging nature of this search and recovery operation.
This tragic outcome serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with solo hiking in remote wilderness areas. The Bighorn National Forest spans over 1 million acres, with 191,000 acres dedicated to the Cloud Peak Wilderness, where Gardner was believed to have been traveling.

While the exact cause of death is yet to be determined by the Big Horn County Coroner’s Office, authorities believe Gardner succumbed to a tragic accident. This development follows earlier reports that search efforts had been suspended after officials concluded that “the most optimistic survival odds have run out.”
The facts paint a picture of a challenging search operation culminating in a dangerous recovery. As Gardner’s body is returned to his family, questions remain about the specific circumstances that led to this unfortunate outcome.
