Two Navy pilots are safe after the crash of a military fighter plane at San Diego Bay in California.
According to two Navy officials, both pilots ejected from the aircraft, which crashed at around 10:17 a.m. local time. They were the only occupants on board. A Navy official identified the plane as an EA-18G Growler, a variant of the F/A-18F Super Hornet. The crash occurred near Naval Air Station North Island, part of Naval Base Coronado.
Within minutes of entering the water, a fishing boat rescued them. According to the Coast Guard, the pilots had been transferred to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations ship that was already present at the scene.
The Coast Guard has reported that the two pilots were taken to a hospital in the area, and are in stable condition.
A spokeswoman for the City of San Diego said officials would be heading to the harbor with a diving crew. The response was canceled after officials discovered that the pilots were already rescued. According to the city, the San Diego Police Department is managing traffic on the shore.
