Brazilian authorities announced Friday the capture of a suspected serial killer linked to at least 16 confirmed deaths since May, concluding a intensive manhunt that ended with the suspect’s arrest while disguised as a woman and carrying an infant.

The 33-year-old suspect, identified as Jorlan Lopes da Silva, was apprehended Sunday following a 30-hour police search through forested terrain in Paraiba state in northeastern Brazil. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing a dress and long black wig in what police characterized as an attempt to evade capture. Authorities reported he was carrying a baby in his arms, though the child was not related to him. Police have not released information regarding the infant’s condition.

The scale of the investigation took a significant turn when the suspect claimed responsibility for 80 homicides during initial questioning. However, civil police have thus far confirmed his participation in 16 killings in the region, 11 of which he confessed to during formal interrogation. All 16 confirmed homicides occurred within the past seven months. Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the victims or specific details regarding the nature of the crimes.

This arrest represents the culmination of an extended investigation. The suspect had previously eluded capture several weeks earlier following a confrontation with security forces. Authorities consider him a member of what they describe as an “ultra-violent” criminal organization operating in the region.

In video obtained from his interrogation, the man denied having ties to organized crime and claimed to have acted independently. He asserted that all his victims were “linked to the criminal world” and that he was dispensing vigilante justice in response to threats directed at himself and his family members.

“I never acted against any family man, mother or working person,” the suspect stated, rejecting characterizations of himself as a “psychopath.” He further claimed to have committed his first homicide at age 13, suggesting a lengthy history of violent criminal activity.

Following the earlier attempt to apprehend him, police recovered significant evidence including bulletproof vests, the stock of a submachine gun, and more than 100 rounds of ammunition. The suspect acknowledged ownership of these items during questioning.

Two additional men were arrested during the operation on suspicion of involvement in the crimes, expanding the scope of the investigation.

The murders occurred in the region of Mulungu, located approximately 1,553 miles north of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil’s northeastern interior. This remote location likely contributed to the extended nature of the investigation and manhunt.

Under Brazilian law, the suspect faces a maximum prison sentence of 40 years, regardless of the number of homicides ultimately proven in court. Brazil’s sentencing guidelines establish this ceiling for criminal punishment, meaning that even if prosecutors substantiate his claim of 80 murders, the legal system cannot impose a longer term of incarceration.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to verify the suspect’s claims and establish the full scope of criminal activity in the region. The case has drawn national attention given the brutality of the confirmed crimes and the suspect’s extraordinary claims regarding the total number of victims.
