Matt Damon has disclosed a serious medical emergency that nearly prevented his attendance at one of Hollywood’s most prominent events. The actor revealed that his wife, Luciana Barroso, underwent emergency brain surgery for an aneurysm just one week before the 2024 Academy Awards ceremony.

In a recent interview, Damon explained that his wife had fully recovered from the procedure, expressing gratitude for the outcome. What happened next, however, left the actor deeply moved. Despite having undergone major brain surgery only days earlier, Barroso made the decision to dress for the evening and accompany her husband to an Oscars after-party.

"She surprised me and got a dress, and we went out to the after-party," Damon recalled. The actor noted that his wife remembered a previous occasion when he had skipped the celebration, and she was determined not to let that happen again. He described her decision as heroic and deeply meaningful.

The reference points back to the 2007 Academy Awards, when director Martin Scorsese won his first Oscar for best director for "The Departed," a crime drama in which Damon starred prominently. That evening, Damon was absent from the ceremony, filming scenes in Miami for "The Bourne Ultimatum" while living there with Barroso and their infant daughter. When "The Departed" won best picture, the actor received numerous calls from colleagues questioning his absence. Looking back, Damon acknowledged he had made a mistake.

Nearly two decades later, Damon received another opportunity to experience awards season success with Christopher Nolan’s "Oppenheimer," which won best picture at the 2024 ceremony. This time, his wife ensured they would not miss the moment, despite her recent medical ordeal.

The actor has consistently credited his family with helping him balance Hollywood’s demanding production schedules. He and Barroso have maintained a longstanding agreement limiting his time away for work to two weeks. That arrangement faced a significant test during production of Nolan’s upcoming film "The Odyssey," scheduled for 2026, when Damon spent three and a half weeks away during the initial filming period. He acknowledged the sacrifice his family made and expressed appreciation for their support.

Damon and Barroso married privately in 2005. They have three daughters together: Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15. Barroso also has a daughter, Alexia, 27, from a previous relationship, whom Damon has helped raise.

The actor also spoke favorably of his longtime friend and collaborator Ben Affleck, noting how both men have adjusted their priorities since achieving success together with "Good Will Hunting." Damon observed that Affleck has turned down projects requiring extended time away from his children, reflecting the changed priorities both actors now share.

While Damon stated he has no expectation of another career-defining opportunity matching their early success, he expressed his intention to continue working with Affleck, saying he wants to make quality films and maintain their creative partnership as they pursue the aspirations they shared in their youth.
