According to officials, a parent tackled the man who fired during a band contest at a Houston High School while others disarmed and detained him. A person was injured.

According to the police, the man entered Pasadena Memorial High School in his 80s on Saturday night during a competition involving students from multiple school districts. He then fired a weapon of a small caliber.

Angleton Independent Schools District confirmed that the injured person was a technical advisor for the band. The shooter who was allegedly struck in the shoulder by the police was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The Pasadena School District claims that the person who fired the weapon wasn’t associated with the competition. A parent tackled the suspect after the shooting and “several Good Samaritans”, helped him to be apprehended.

In a press conference, Chief Jerry Wright of the Pasadena Police Department stated that an unarmed suspect had been disarmed within 60 seconds. He was also stopped from shooting again by the police.

A press release from the Pearland Independent Schools district said that parents of Pearland students had “bravely intervened and successfully subdued the individual” before the arrival of law enforcement.

What Happened?

The parents were fathers who were helping with the competition.

Abram Trevino, Adam Curow, and Efrain “Polo” Castillo – are all Air Force veterans — Efrain “Polo” Castillo has four years of Marine Corps experience. Joe Sanchez served as a sergeant with the Houston Police Department for many decades.

The Pearland Band Dads are a group of parents who help Pearland High School with its band activities. On Saturday, students from the school were present at the competition.

They were making a lot of noise when they moved equipment.

Sanchez stated that “people shouted, ‘Active Shooter, Active Shooter’, so Polo and myself both had the same prop and dropped everything, before racing through the lobby door.

Sanchez stated that another man subdued a suspect before he, the other Pearland Band Dads, and the third band dad got involved.

“I grabbed his arms while Adam took the gun out, and once the gun was removed from his hand, we had no handcuffs, so I took off my belt, made handcuffs, got his right arm secured, got his left arm secured,” Sanchez said.

Possible Motive

Dennis Erwin Brandl Jr. was identified by the Pasadena Police Department as the suspect. Brandl Jr. said he believed he was being pursued and his wife would be murdered. Brandl Jr. fled Spring, arrived in Pasadena, and went to school.

Curow claimed that Brandl, Jr. said something similar to him directly on the night of the shooting.

Curow stated that only parents, students, and spectators were present when the incident occurred.
