Multiple gunmen opened fire near a Seattle community center Tuesday evening while Mayor Katie Wilson was attending a public event with families and children, according to local police.
The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the Yesler Terrace neighborhood, near the Yesler Community Center where Wilson had been speaking to community members. The Seattle Police Department confirmed that several individuals discharged firearms in the vicinity of the facility, causing damage to the building itself.
“At the time of the shooting, the mayor was attending an event with multiple children and adults,” police officials stated in their incident report. Mayor Wilson was quickly escorted from the premises following the outbreak of gunfire.
The building sustained visible damage from the attack. Several bullets struck the community center, leaving holes in windows on the opposite side of the structure from where the mayor had been addressing attendees. Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the proximity of the violence to the public gathering.
Witnesses at the scene reported that multiple suspects fled the area in a vehicle, though investigators have not yet released a description of the getaway car or the individuals involved. The Seattle Police Department’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit has taken the lead on the investigation, working alongside Crime Scene Investigation teams to collect evidence and develop suspect descriptions.
The incident adds to growing concerns about public safety in Seattle, a city that has grappled with rising crime rates in recent years. The brazen nature of the attack, occurring in close proximity to a mayoral event attended by families and children, underscores the challenges facing law enforcement and city officials.
This shooting comes at a time when urban crime has become a central issue in municipal politics across the nation. Seattle, like many major American cities, has seen heated debates over policing policies, prosecution standards, and community safety measures.
The investigation remains active, with detectives working to identify those responsible for the shooting. Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they work to piece together the events of Tuesday evening.
The Yesler Terrace neighborhood, where the shooting occurred, has been the site of ongoing community revitalization efforts in recent years. The community center serves as a gathering place for local residents and frequently hosts public events.
As of this report, no arrests have been made, and police have not indicated whether the mayor or the event itself may have been targeted, or if the shooting was related to other criminal activity in the area.
