The Information, citing an individual with first-hand knowledge, reported on Friday that Alphabet’s Google had laid off hundreds in its platforms and device unit, which is responsible for the Android software, the Pixel phones, and the Chrome web browser.
Reports said that the cuts made on Thursday followed the buyout offers made by the company in January to the employees of the unit.
Google’s spokesperson told The Information that since combining the Platforms and Devices team last year, the company has focused on being more agile and efficient. This included some job cuts in addition to our January voluntary exit program.

Google did not respond immediately to a comment request.
Bloomberg reported in February that Google had reduced its workforce in the cloud division. The report added that only a small number of teams were affected by this round of reductions.
Alphabet announced in January 2023 that it would cut 12,000 positions, or 6%, of its global workforce.
