Multiple arrests were made this weekend following vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., including the detention of a former United States Olympian with documented ties to Democratic political organizations.
David Hearn, a 67-year-old three-time summer Olympian who competed in canoe slalom, faces misdemeanor charges for destruction of government property. The incident occurred Saturday when Hearn allegedly interfered with National Park Service workers who were maintaining the recently renovated reflecting pool. According to authorities, Hearn reached into the water and grabbed a hose being used by park service personnel during cleanup operations.
Federal records reveal that Hearn has contributed to the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue on ten separate occasions. He also donated to Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns five times. These contributions place him within a network that has channeled billions of dollars to Democratic candidates across the nation, including progressive members of Congress.
When questioned about his actions, Hearn described himself to reporters as a “curious citizen” who simply “reached down to see what it felt like.” He characterized the sensation as “very rubbery.”
President Donald Trump addressed the incident through a statement condemning what he termed “disgraceful vandalism” at one of the nation’s most recognizable monuments. The President specifically referenced the use of corrosive chemicals in the pool, which has necessitated extensive cleanup efforts by federal workers.
The vandalism comes shortly after the completion of a renovation project at the reflecting pool undertaken at President Trump’s direction. The pool had been drained and repainted, though the work has faced scrutiny over issues including peeling paint and algae growth in the weeks following its completion.
The weekend demonstrations that led to the vandalism saw protesters descend upon the National Mall, resulting in multiple criminal charges beyond the Hearn incident. Federal and local law enforcement coordinated response efforts to protect the historic site and restore order.
ActBlue, the fundraising platform to which Hearn contributed, has itself become a subject of federal investigation. The organization faces scrutiny over allegations of overseas donations and questions regarding donor fraud. These probes have raised concerns about the transparency and legitimacy of certain contributions processed through the platform.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, stretching more than 2,000 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the World War II Memorial, serves as one of Washington’s most photographed landmarks.
