Democrats on both sides of Congress are holding the pen, poised to introduce legislation that would mandate retailers to lay bare any price hikes tied directly to the tariffs brought in by President Donald Trump.

Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer from New York have christened this proposed law the “Truth in Tariffs Act”. If passed, it would require the big retail giants to highlight the slice of an item’s price that comes from tariffs. Yet, given the Republican majority in both houses, its chances of becoming law are about as likely as a cold day in Texas, and President Trump would likely veto it faster than a jackrabbit on a date.

Raskin, in no uncertain terms, accuses President Trump of throwing our economy into a state of chaos with his tariffs, causing prices to skyrocket and leaving consumers and businesses trying to find their footing amidst the uncertainty. He likens these tariffs to a national sales tax that hits the working families hardest.

The President, last month, slapped reciprocal tariffs on U.S. trading partners, but then issued a 90-day pause, leaving a baseline of 10% tariffs in place. Countries like China, Canada, and Mexico are grappling with separate tariffs on most imports, ostensibly to push them to crack down on fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration. Aluminum, steel, automobiles, and selected parts also have tariffs bearing down on them like a Texas heatwave.

The notion of disclosing these price increases was once entertained by Amazon, only to be discarded when it came under the public gaze. This move was labeled as a “hostile and political act” by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Schumer insists it’s all about transparency and being straight with the American consumer, informing them about how these tariffs will impact their household budgets. According to Schumer, retailers should welcome this because the price hikes aren’t their doing, but that of Trump and his tariffs.

So, what we know for certain is this: the stakes couldn’t be higher. The Democrats’ legislation could potentially lead to a wave of public anger, prompting constituents to reach out to their Republican senators and congressmembers, urging them to join the Democrats and pass laws that would repeal some of these tariffs.

The truth about tariffs might just be powerful enough to shake the foundations of Congress.
