Busta Rhymes faces an assault charge in New York, and his day in court is coming soon.

A spokesperson for the New York Police Department said Thursday that Busta Rhymes, 52 years old, formerly Trevor Smith Jr. had surrendered himself at Brooklyn’s precinct 84 on Tuesday night.

The man was charged with assault in the third degree and issued a desk appearance, which required him to appear at a criminal court for arraignment. According to the spokesperson, the investigation is ongoing.

According to New York law, third-degree assault is a misdemeanor if a person “recklessly” causes physical harm or “causes bodily injury to another by using a deadly weapon, dangerous instrument, or both.”

According to an NYPD spokesperson, the charge stems back from an incident that occurred on Jan. 10, in which a person aged 50 was repeatedly punched in his face near the corner Jay and Front streets of Brooklyn’s Dumbo district after a verbal argument.

A spokesperson for the NYPD confirmed that the victim had swelling on the left side. They were transported in stable condition by EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals/Woodhull.

TMZ, and the New York Post, were the first media outlets to report on the story.

The Grammy-nominated rapper “Woo Hah!! The rapper “Got You All In Control” was charged in 2015 with assault of the second degree for allegedly throwing an empty cardboard container containing protein drink towards a gym worker in Manhattan’s Chelsea district.

Busta Rhymes will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the BET Awards in June 2023. Last year, he was supposed to embark on the 24-date Blockbuster Tour. However, it was canceled a week before its scheduled start. He was previously on tour with 50 Cent’s The Final Lap Tour.
