A rapidly advancing wildfire has consumed more than 10,500 acres in northern Nevada, forcing emergency evacuations and prompting Governor Joe Lombardo to declare a state of emergency in Washoe County.

The Hawk Fire, which began burning outside Reno, expanded to nearly 11,000 acres by Saturday evening as high winds pushed flames toward residential neighborhoods. Officials estimate approximately 1,000 homes now face immediate danger, with some areas receiving “go now” evacuation orders.

“This is an active and rapidly evolving situation, and I urge everyone in the affected areas to remain vigilant,” Governor Lombardo stated, noting the fire “is spreading quickly and threatening homes and structures.”

Richard Edwards, chief of Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue in Washoe County, described the challenging conditions facing firefighters. “The Hawk Fire is a very dynamic incident for us as it is being driven by the winds,” Edwards explained. “The wind-driven fires move very rapidly into our residential areas, creating a lot of challenges for our firefighters to save homes and protect lives.”

Time-lapse footage captured the fire’s advance down a slope toward illuminated Reno neighborhoods late Saturday before visibility diminished. The rapid progression has been fueled by a dangerous combination of gusty winds, low humidity, and dry brush throughout the region.

Approximately 400 firefighters have been deployed to combat the blaze, supported by helicopter operations continuing through the night. However, persistent high winds have significantly complicated containment efforts, allowing the fire to expand throughout the day despite these resources.

Mayor Hillary Schieve of Reno issued a direct warning to residents in the fire’s path, acknowledging that structures have already been lost. “Your life is more important than a building,” the mayor emphasized, urging compliance with evacuation orders.

Several Reno casinos responded to the emergency by offering discounted rooms to displaced residents seeking shelter from the advancing flames.

The Hawk Fire represents the latest in a series of significant wildfires across the American West this summer, as the region continues to grapple with conditions conducive to rapid fire spread. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of this particular blaze.

Fire officials continue to monitor weather conditions and wind patterns, which will prove critical in determining the fire’s trajectory and the scope of necessary evacuations in the coming hours. The situation remains fluid as firefighters work to establish containment lines and protect threatened communities.

Residents throughout the affected areas have been advised to remain alert for further evacuation orders and to prepare emergency supplies should conditions deteriorate. Local emergency management officials are coordinating response efforts and maintaining communication with evacuated families.

The state of emergency declaration enables Nevada to mobilize additional resources and support for firefighting operations and evacuation assistance as this crisis continues to unfold in Washoe County.
