American Airlines Flight Diverted After Passenger Attacks Fellow Travelers

An American Airlines flight bound for Newark was forced to divert to Baltimore late Thursday evening after a passenger violently attacked fellow travelers, forcing crew members and passengers to restrain the individual with zip ties and duct tape.

The incident occurred approximately two hours into the flight from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. According to witnesses aboard the aircraft, what began as a routine evening flight transformed suddenly into a scene of chaos and violence.

Juan Mejia, a retired law enforcement officer who was traveling on the flight, described the rapid escalation. The situation deteriorated without warning, he said, as passengers became aware of shouting and commotion several rows behind them. Upon turning to assess the disturbance, Mejia observed the assailant with his hands around another passenger’s neck, physically assaulting the man seated beside him in the aisle seat.

Mejia, along with fellow passenger Richard Olenick, acted swiftly to intervene. The two men, who had been seated two rows ahead of the disturbance, moved to restrain the violent passenger. Flight attendants provided zip ties, and the restraining effort extended to the use of duct tape. Photographs from the scene show the restrained individual bound to his seat with multiple loops of tape securing his wrists, torso, and head.

Prior to the physical assault, witnesses report that a flight attendant had attempted to de-escalate the situation through verbal intervention. The passenger allegedly responded with racial slurs directed at the crew member, followed by homophobic comments. When these verbal attacks failed to resolve the matter, the situation turned violent, prompting the decision to physically restrain the individual and divert the aircraft.

American Airlines confirmed the incident Friday morning, stating that the flight made an unscheduled landing in Baltimore where law enforcement removed the disruptive passenger from the aircraft. The flight subsequently continued to its intended destination at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The airline issued a formal statement emphasizing its commitment to passenger and crew safety. The company expressed gratitude to its team members for their professional handling of the crisis and thanked passengers for their patience during the disruption. The statement made clear that violent behavior would not be tolerated on its aircraft.

Federal authorities have taken an active interest in the case. The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that while the suspect currently faces state charges and remains in custody, agents have opened an investigation into the matter. The Bureau is conducting passenger interviews to establish a complete factual record of the incident. Following this investigation, the FBI will consult with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland to determine whether federal charges are warranted.
