A Michigan woman faces serious felony charges after authorities say she imprisoned her disabled sister-in-law in a basement for two years, subjecting the victim to conditions of severe deprivation that nearly resulted in her death by starvation.
Tasha Beamon, 48, of Saginaw, has been charged with vulnerable adult abuse and unlawful imprisonment following an investigation that began when the victim managed to escape her confinement on March 15.
The 58-year-old victim, whose identity has been withheld, broke free from the basement and shattered a neighbor’s window in a desperate attempt to alert someone to her situation. The neighbor immediately contacted emergency services, and responding officers learned the disturbing details of what investigators describe as prolonged captivity and abuse.
According to Saginaw Police Detective Sergeant Jeff Doud, the victim told officers that Beamon, who is the wife of the victim’s late brother, had held her captive in the basement of the Saginaw residence for approximately two years. During this time, the victim was confined to an old mattress and subjected to conditions that threatened her survival.
“She told officers she was not fed very often and that she didn’t have any access to water,” Detective Sergeant Doud stated. The victim also reported that a radio was played continuously throughout her captivity, adding another layer of torment to her ordeal.
The victim’s disabled status made her particularly vulnerable to this alleged abuse, which is reflected in the charges brought against Beamon. Vulnerable adult abuse charges carry significant penalties under Michigan law, recognizing the heightened duty of care owed to individuals who cannot adequately protect themselves.
The case bears disturbing similarities to other instances of vulnerable individuals being subjected to inhumane treatment by those entrusted with their care. The relationship between Beamon and the victim, established through marriage to the victim’s late brother, would have positioned Beamon as a natural caregiver, making the alleged betrayal of that trust particularly egregious.
The victim’s successful escape and the swift response by law enforcement prevented what could have been a fatal outcome. Medical professionals who examined the victim after her rescue found evidence consistent with severe malnutrition and prolonged neglect.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full timeline of events and determine whether others may have been aware of the victim’s situation. The case has shocked the Saginaw community and raised questions about how such circumstances could persist undetected for such an extended period.
Beamon is currently in custody at the Saginaw County Jail as she awaits further court proceedings. The charges she faces carry substantial prison sentences if she is convicted.
The victim is receiving medical care and support services as she recovers from her ordeal.
