Graham Greene, the esteemed actor of Canadian First Nations heritage, has passed away at the age of 73 after an extended illness. This news comes to us directly from Greene’s representative.
The representative did not elaborate on the nature of Greene’s illness. Yet, in his words, the actor was described as a ‘great man of morals, ethics, and character,’ who will be profoundly missed.

Greene’s journey began in Ohsweken, Canada, in 1952. His acting career, launched on the stage in the 1970s, transitioned to television in 1979. His first film, “Running Brave,” a biopic from 1983 about Billy Mills, an Oglala Sioux tribe member and gold medalist at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, marked the beginning of a fruitful career in cinema.

His role as Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s “Dances With Wolves” in 1990 earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. The film garnered 11 other Oscar nominations and won 7 awards, including best picture. Greene’s career continued to flourish with roles in high-profile movies such as “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” “The Green Mile,” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” He also graced the small screen with multiple TV series appearances.
Greene’s final performance will be seen in the forthcoming film “Ice Fall.” The film is currently in post-production, and a release date has yet to be announced.
His accolades extended to music as he won a Grammy in 2000 for his work on a children’s spoken word album. Greene was also a two-time Gemini Award winner and won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Comedy Film in 2025 for his role in “Seeds.” In the same year, he was honored with Canada’s Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.
Greene is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore, his daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene, and his grandson Talo.
