A memo from the Pentagon has revealed a shift in policy that reverberates like a thunderclap across our armed forces. The Department of Defense is suspending gender healthcare for transgender troops, a move that leads us down the path towards President Donald Trump’s plan of expelling these individuals from U.S. military ranks.
This memo is a clear, unambiguous directive. It bars any new hormone treatments as well as surgical procedures for transgender troops. Stephen Ferrara, the acting assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, gave the marching orders in no uncertain terms.
The U.S. Supreme Court on May 6 gave the green light for Trump’s administration to enforce its ban on transgender individuals serving in the military. This means the armed forces can discharge thousands of current transgender troops and reject new recruits while the legal battles continue.
There are 4,240 U.S. active-duty and National Guard transgender troops, according to official counts. Transgender rights advocates, however, put forth higher estimates.

Trump, upon his return to the presidency, signed an executive order that reversed a policy of his predecessor, Joe Biden, which allowed transgender troops to serve openly. A February Gallup poll found that 58% of Americans favored allowing openly transgender individuals to serve in the military, a decrease from 71% in 2019.
A former Fox News host, now U.S. Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has aligned himself with conservative stances on culture war issues, including eliminating diversity initiatives at the Pentagon. Hegseth made his opposition to gender care for transgender troops clear in a social media post, promising to thwart any attempts to resume such treatments.
This policy shift raises fundamental questions about democracy, freedom, and the human impact of policies.
So, as we consider this new direction, we must remember that the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will we uphold our enduring American values of equality and justice? Or will we let discrimination define who gets to wear the uniform of this great nation? Only time will tell
