A driver remained in custody Wednesday following an early morning collision with a temporary security barrier near the White House, according to federal authorities.
The incident occurred just before 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Madison and H Streets in Northwest Washington. A U.S. Secret Service spokesperson confirmed that uniformed officers immediately apprehended the driver after the vehicle struck the barrier.
The identity of the driver has not been released to the public. Secret Service officials indicated that criminal charges are pending, though they declined to specify the nature of those charges at this time. The individual was being interviewed by investigators as of Wednesday morning.
In response to the incident, authorities temporarily closed several streets and entrances in the surrounding area. The bomb disposal unit cleared the vehicle and declared the scene safe. All street closures were subsequently lifted, and normal traffic patterns resumed in the area.
