A twenty-four-year-old illegal immigrant faces multiple charges after authorities say he struck a motorcyclist in Polk County, Florida, and fled the scene without rendering aid.
Gudiel Miguel-Vasquez was taken into custody Sunday evening following an incident at a Walmart parking lot where he allegedly ran a stop sign while driving a black Scion sedan and collided with a motorcyclist. According to law enforcement officials, Miguel-Vasquez was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and without a valid driver’s license.
Witnesses at the scene reported that Miguel-Vasquez did not stop to check on the injured motorcyclist. Instead, he continued driving through the parking lot despite his vehicle having sustained substantial damage to its front end. The motorcyclist, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for a broken arm and concussion.
The swift apprehension of the suspect came shortly after authorities received the initial report of the collision. A deputy patrolling the area spotted the damaged vehicle at a nearby intersection. The Scion was missing its front bumper entirely, and smoke could be seen rising from the engine compartment.
When approached by law enforcement, Miguel-Vasquez reportedly admitted he did not possess a driver’s license. He now faces charges including leaving the scene of a crash with injury, driving under the influence, driving under the influence with property damage, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
