In eastern Poland, an unidentified object has crashed into a cornfield, resulting in an explosion. The country’s news agency PAP shared these details earlier today.
The local police responded to the incident around 2 a.m. following reports of the crash. At the scene, near the village of Osiny, they discovered remnants of burned metal and plastic. As per the reports, the explosion led to shattered windows in nearby houses, but it is important to note that there were no reported injuries.
Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command, in a statement released on social media, clarified that there were no recorded violations of Polish airspace from Ukraine or Belarus overnight. Initially, officials suggested that the explosion might have been triggered by a part of an old engine equipped with a propeller.
However, Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz later indicated that the object was more likely a drone. An ongoing analysis is expected to determine whether the device was military or commercial in nature. Lublin District Prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz stated that a team of both civilian and military investigators was meticulously examining the crash site.
This development follows earlier reports of numerous intrusions into Polish airspace since Russia initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago. The situation has understandably raised concerns in the European Union and NATO member states, serving as a stark reminder of the proximity of the conflict.
