Alyssa Canul, 17, and Joseph Anthony Aguilar, 18, were taken into custody in late May following what authorities describe as a calculated scheme targeting young men through dating applications. The arrests came after a series of brutal attacks that left multiple victims injured, including a 15-year-old boy who was shot four times.

Aguilar was apprehended on May 26 during a multi-agency SWAT operation in Universal City. Canul was arrested the following day, May 27, and charged with two counts of aggravated robbery. Aguilar faces multiple felony charges in connection with the alleged crimes.

According to Universal City officials, the couple had recently relocated to the area and were residing at the Villa Mesa Apartments when the attacks occurred. Investigators say the pair employed a disturbing pattern of deception, using dating platforms to establish contact with young men before convincing them to meet in person.

What the victims believed would be social encounters turned into violent confrontations. In one incident, a victim was robbed and pistol-whipped during the attack. In another case that underscores the severity of these crimes, a 15-year-old boy was lured to a predetermined location where he was shot four times. The teenager survived the assault and is currently recovering from his injuries.

The investigation moved swiftly once authorities identified the pattern of attacks. Universal City Police Chief Johnny Siemens commended the rapid response by his department and the cooperation of partner law enforcement agencies in bringing the suspects into custody.
