A paddleboarder’s death in Maine, initially thought to be a tragic accident, has now been classified as a homicide. Sunshine Stewart, 48 years old, was found deceased during a search operation last Thursday at Crawford Pond in Union, Maine.

Ms. Stewart was a seasonal resident at the nearby Mic Mac campground. Reports indicate she was last seen embarking on her paddleboard Wednesday evening. The Maine State Police have confirmed that an autopsy conducted by the state medical examiner’s office determined the death to be a homicide, though the specific cause has not been disclosed.

Kathy Lunt, owner of the Mic Mac campground, reports that she alerted authorities when Ms. Stewart’s roommate expressed concern over her failure to return. This led to a search operation that culminated in the discovery of Ms. Stewart’s body.

Resident Kate Hamar told reporters, “At first, a lot of people thought it was a boating accident. It’s left everybody pretty shaken.” This sentiment appears to be echoed throughout the community.

Law enforcement officials have issued a statement urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior. They are specifically requesting information from anyone who may have observed Ms. Stewart paddleboarding between 6 and 9 p.m. last Wednesday.

Authorities were seen searching a dumpster at the Mic Mac campground on Monday. The police have stated that additional information will be released as the investigation progresses and when it is appropriate to do so.

This tragic event has deeply affected the local community. Meredith Smith, a Union resident who knew Ms. Stewart described her as “a great, great person all-around,” adding, “To know Sunny, I don’t think she had a bad bone in her body, and anyone that knew her was just in awe of her.”

As this story develops, we will continue to report the facts as they become known.
