A Los Angeles man suspected of murdering his wife and abandoning her body in a remote forest has been returned to the United States to face justice after spending several months in Peruvian custody.
Jossimar Cabrera, 36, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday evening, where he was taken into custody by authorities from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The suspect had been held in Peru since late August, when he voluntarily surrendered to the National Police in that country following an international manhunt.
The district attorney’s office has formally filed murder charges against Cabrera in connection with the death of his wife, Sheylla Cabrera. As of Sunday, it remains unclear whether the suspect has retained legal counsel.
The case began unfolding in mid-August when Sheylla Cabrera, 33, was reported missing on August 12. Four days later, on August 16, her body was discovered at the bottom of an embankment in Angeles National Forest, south of Lancaster, the city where the couple had resided with their three young sons.
The investigation quickly focused on Jossimar Cabrera after homicide detectives obtained surveillance footage from the couple’s apartment complex. The video evidence allegedly shows the suspect dragging a heavy object wrapped in a large piece of material from the residence. When investigators recovered Sheylla Cabrera’s remains, they noted that the body was wrapped in similar material, establishing a crucial link between the suspect and the crime scene.
Following the discovery of his wife’s body, Jossimar Cabrera fled the country with the couple’s three sons, traveling to Peru. The children were reported missing shortly after their mother’s body was found, adding another layer of urgency to the international investigation.
Peruvian authorities, working in coordination with American law enforcement, moved swiftly to resolve the situation. On August 16, Peru’s foreign ministry announced through official channels that the three children had been repatriated to Los Angeles, where they were reunited with their deceased mother’s family members.
The cooperation between American and Peruvian authorities in this case demonstrates the effectiveness of international law enforcement partnerships in pursuing justice across borders. The swift return of the children to their maternal family and the subsequent extradition of the suspect reflect a coordinated effort to bring resolution to this tragic case.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of Sheylla Cabrera’s death, though such information typically emerges during the course of legal proceedings. The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare their case against the accused.
The three young children, now in the care of their mother’s family, face an uncertain future as they cope with the loss of their mother and the criminal proceedings against their father. This case serves as a somber reminder of the domestic tragedies that continue to plague communities across the nation.
