Rep. Elise Stefanik, the Republican from New York, is tipping her hat to the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office for launching an investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, a probe rooted in allegations of mortgage fraud. Stefanik’s message is clear as a Texas sunrise: “Nobody is above the law.”

These grave accusations, fiddling with records to sweeten loan terms on properties in Virginia and New York, rattle the public’s faith in our institutions. The irony, Stefanik argues, is thicker than East Texas molasses: James is being examined for the very crime she allegedly falsely and unlawfully prosecuted President Donald Trump for.

The investigation followed a criminal referral from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte earlier this month. Pulte’s letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi outlined that James could face a raft of criminal charges, from wire fraud to bank fraud, and even false statements to a financial institution, all under both state and federal laws. James, however, has brushed off these allegations, dubbing them a leg of Trump’s “revenge tour.”

Stefanik has previously lodged a complaint with the New York State Committee on Professional Standards over James’ investigations into Trump. “Her weaponized lawfare campaign, which started the moment she announced her candidacy for Attorney General, undercut the impartiality expected of New York’s top prosecutor,” Stefanik noted. “The investigation into Letitia James is a necessary stride towards justice. I will persist in my fight to unmask NY corruption, safeguard constitutional rights, and hold these failed Democrat leaders in NY to account.”

Stefanik has shown interest in running for the governorship of New York come 2026. As we watch this saga unfold, remember that in the pursuit of truth and justice, not even the most prominent among us is above the law. T
