A resident of California, who had entered the country illegally, has been arrested and charged by federal prosecutors for staging a falsehood about an immigration-related kidnapping. The alleged plot, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s office in central California, was intended to raise funds under pretenses.
Yuriana Julia Pelaez Calderon, a 41-year-old originally from Mexico, is currently being held on charges of conspiracy and making false statements to federal officers. According to reliable sources, the false narrative of Calderon’s arrest and detention by federal agents was disseminated by her attorney during a media conference held on June 30.
Calderon was allegedly abducted from a restaurant parking lot in downtown Los Angeles by federal authorities. The evidence suggests that her daughter subsequently established a GoFundMe page to solicit donations for Calderon’s release. However, investigations indicate that this was an orchestrated hoax.

This development follows earlier reports that federal agents tracked Calderon a week after the media conference. Upon engaging with Calderon, the authorities reported that she maintained the story of her kidnapping. Further investigations revealed doctored photographs purporting to show Calderon’s rescue. The agents also discovered plans for another media briefing, allegedly to further stimulate donations.
Eddy Wang, HSI Los Angeles Special Agent in Charge, expressed dismay about the misuse of investigative resources for a fabricated incident. On the other hand, California U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli criticized the dangerous implications of alleging Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as kidnappers. This raises important questions about the influence of misinformation on public perception and the credibility of federal agents. The significance of this should not be overlooked.
The investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the hoax and the parties involved.
