Representative Marcy Kaptur of Ohio remains in stable condition at a Toledo hospital following a hit-and-run collision Sunday morning that occurred while she was traveling to church services.
The Toledo Police Department reported that the incident took place at approximately 10:48 a.m. at the intersection of North Detroit and Central avenues. According to investigators, a southbound vehicle crossed into the path of the congresswoman’s car, causing the collision before the at-fault driver fled the scene.
Kaptur, a Democrat representing Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Her office released a statement confirming that she sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is alert and responsive to treatment.
“This morning, Congresswoman Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck. She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries,” the statement read.
The driver of Kaptur’s vehicle, identified by authorities as Kegan Zimmermann, was also transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center with injuries that are not considered serious. Both individuals are expected to recover.
Toledo Police have impounded both vehicles involved in the collision as evidence is collected and processed. Investigators characterized the incident as a “hit-skip crash” and emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages.
According to the police department’s statement, significant progress has been made in the investigation, though no arrests have been announced at this time. The department has not released details regarding the description of the fleeing vehicle or potential suspects.
The incident occurred as Kaptur was en route to Sunday morning worship services, a routine activity for the longtime congresswoman. The circumstances surrounding why the at-fault driver fled the scene remain under investigation.
Kaptur has represented Ohio’s 9th District since 1983, making her the longest-serving woman currently in the House of Representatives. Her district encompasses portions of the Toledo metropolitan area and stretches along Lake Erie’s coastline.
