A family vacation in the majestic Dolomites of northern Italy ended in tragedy on October 17 when an American tourist fell to her death after stepping off a marked trail.
Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva, 36, a marketing and business development professional from the Miami area, was hiking with family members near Forcella Pordoi, an alpine pass at approximately 9,000 feet elevation, when the accident occurred. According to Italian authorities and local news reports, she left the designated path and lost her footing, falling an estimated 1,000 feet down the steep mountainside. Her sister witnessed the fall.
The Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue, a volunteer rescue organization, confirmed the incident in an official statement. “The hiker was on vacation with her family when, at an exposed point, she slipped, plunging into the void below,” the organization said.
The hiking group had been near the upper cable car station and had planned to visit the Maria refuge on Sass Pordoi. When the accident occurred, witnesses immediately contacted emergency services. The 112 control center dispatched the Alta Val di Fassa rescue team along with an air ambulance to the scene.
A mountain rescuer already working in the vicinity quickly moved to provide the helicopter crew with exact coordinates. Medical personnel were lowered onto the mountainside by 12:30 in the afternoon, where a doctor pronounced Rubio Leiva dead at the scene.
Italian media reports indicated that she had stepped off the trail to find a better vantage point for a photograph. However, the official alpine rescue logs noted only that she slipped at an exposed point on the mountain. The distinction underscores the inherent dangers of alpine hiking, where even momentary lapses in judgment can prove fatal.
Family members who witnessed the tragedy were airlifted to the nearby town of Canazei. Rubio Leiva’s body was retrieved by helicopter and turned over to local authorities.
According to Italian news reports, Rubio Leiva was a graduate of Brigham Young University and worked as a manager for Rubio Contesse Advisors in Florida.
The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its distinctive limestone peaks and stunning vistas, attract millions of visitors annually. The region has seen increased attention in recent months as concerns mount over overtourism and the dangers associated with visitors leaving marked trails for photographs.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks inherent in mountain recreation, particularly in alpine environments where terrain can prove unforgiving and conditions can change rapidly. Local rescue organizations regularly respond to emergencies involving tourists unfamiliar with mountain hazards or who underestimate the dangers of venturing off established paths.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rubio Leiva’s death continues under the supervision of Italian authorities.
