The report disputed details of a story Moore has frequently told about his family’s background, specifically regarding his grandfather and great-grandfather being forced to leave South Carolina due to threats from the Ku Klux Klan.
“It’s hurtful, and it’s offensive,” Moore stated when asked about the report’s findings.
The governor provided specific details about his family history, naming his maternal grandfather’s father, James Joshua Thomas, as the central figure in the account. According to Moore, Thomas was born in South Carolina and, while still a toddler, his family was driven from the state by the Ku Klux Klan. The family subsequently relocated to Jamaica before Thomas eventually returned to the United States.
“I know my family’s history,” Moore said. “I know that James Joshua Thomas was born in South Carolina, and when he was a toddler, when he’s just a child, was run out by the Ku Klux Klan, that his family picked up and they moved to Jamaica, but that he came back to this country, and he became the first black minister in the history of the Dutch Reformed Church.”
This narrative has been a recurring element in Moore’s public presentations and speeches. The governor has regularly referenced his maternal grandfather, James Thomas, when recounting this family history.
The Washington Free Beacon’s investigation earlier this month raised questions about the veracity of these biographical details, though the specific discrepancies cited in the report were not immediately clear from Moore’s response.
