The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that a man beaten by a mob in Honolulu over the weekend while wearing what appeared to be an Immigration and Customs Enforcement uniform has no affiliation with the federal agency.

A video circulating widely on social media shows the incident, which occurred Saturday evening in the Waikiki neighborhood. The footage depicts a 52-year-old man wearing a tactical vest emblazoned with the letters “ICE” confronting a small group of individuals. The encounter quickly escalated when members of the group threw liquid at the man, then physically attacked him.

Three individuals can be seen in the video grabbing the man and forcing him to the ground. What follows is a disturbing display of violence as the attackers punch and kick their victim repeatedly. The assault continues even after the man appears to lose consciousness, with one attacker continuing to strike his face while two others restrain him. The man eventually regains consciousness and stumbles away from the scene, visibly injured with what appears to be a bloody nose.

The incident initially sparked significant concern on social media, coming at a time of heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement operations and growing reports of assaults targeting actual ICE agents. Some observers questioned whether the attack represented an escalation in violence against federal law enforcement officers.

However, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson has categorically stated that “this person is NOT an ICE agent and is not connected to DHS in any way.” The agency declined to provide details about the man’s true identity but issued a stern warning about the consequences of such impersonation.

“Anyone caught impersonating a federal immigration agent will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the spokesperson said, adding that “impersonating a federal immigration officer endangers public safety and erodes trust in law enforcement.”

The Honolulu Police Department has confirmed that a 15-year-old male has been charged in connection with the attack. According to police records, the suspect was initially arrested on charges of second-degree assault but those charges were subsequently reduced to attempted assault. The assault was reported to have occurred at 8:12 p.m. on Saturday evening.

Neither the suspect nor the victim has been publicly identified by authorities.

The incident raises serious questions about both the motivations of the impersonator and the violent response he provoked. Impersonating a federal officer is a serious crime that can result in federal prosecution, fines, and imprisonment. Such actions undermine legitimate law enforcement operations and can create dangerous situations, as this incident clearly demonstrates.

The attack also highlights the volatile atmosphere surrounding immigration enforcement in the current climate, where genuine federal agents face increasing hostility while performing their duties. The Department of Homeland Security continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.
