Las Vegas Arrest Ends Manhunt for Suspect in Philadelphia Terror Incidents

Federal authorities have apprehended a suspect accused of terrorizing citizens in downtown Philadelphia while concealing his identity behind a horror movie mask, bringing to a close a cross-country manhunt that spanned multiple states.

Zymire Hughes, 22, was taken into custody Tuesday evening at approximately 8 p.m. at an apartment complex in southeast Las Vegas. He now awaits extradition to Philadelphia, where he faces charges including aggravated assault and terroristic threats, according to the United States Marshals Service.

The incidents in question occurred on the morning of August 12 near Philadelphia City Hall, where authorities allege Hughes spent approximately fifteen minutes pursuing and menacing at least six individuals in the city’s Center City district. The alleged crimes paint a disturbing picture of calculated intimidation in one of the city’s most prominent public areas.

According to Philadelphia police, the series of threats began at 5:18 in the morning at the intersection of 15th and Chestnut Streets. Investigators say Hughes, wearing what has been described as a Chucky-style Halloween mask, ran toward multiple individuals in what appeared to be deliberate attempts to frighten and antagonize them.

The suspect’s behavior escalated when he entered a Dunkin’ establishment on the 1500 block of Chestnut Street minutes later. Employees refused him service due to the mask, prompting his departure. Surveillance cameras subsequently captured Hughes running toward pedestrians at the southwest corner of Penn Square at City Hall around 5:25 a.m.

Perhaps most troubling among the allegations is an encounter with a female jogger at 15th and Market Streets. According to police reports, Hughes blocked the woman’s path and asked her, “Are you ready to die?” The woman fled the scene and sustained a leg injury during her escape. Following these incidents, Hughes allegedly retreated to Suburban Station.

Philadelphia Police Captain Jason Smith indicated that Hughes appeared to be documenting his actions, allegedly holding a cellphone with its light activated during the incidents.

Following the August 12 rampage, Hughes departed Philadelphia on August 19, flying from Trenton-Mercer Airport in Ewing, New Jersey to Orlando, Florida, before continuing on to Las Vegas. Federal marshals determined that while Hughes has maintained residence in Las Vegas since February, he has family connections in Philadelphia and is believed to have spent several weeks in the city prior to the alleged crimes.

Robert Clark, Supervisory Deputy United States Marshal for the Eastern Pennsylvania Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force, emphasized the futility of Hughes’s attempt to evade justice. “By hiding behind a Chucky-style Halloween mask, Hughes terrorized Philadelphia residents and believed he could evade law enforcement. He was wrong,” Clark stated. “His arrest should send a clear message: you can hide your face, but you can’t hide from the elite investigators of the United States Marshal Service.”

Hughes remains in custody at the Clark County Detention Center pending his return to Pennsylvania to face the charges against him.
