A young golfer who was reportedly struck by lightning while participating in a match in New Jersey has succumbed to his injuries, according to statements from his family.
Simon John Mariani, 28, was in the midst of play at the Ballyowen Golf Course in Hamburg on July 8 when he was hit by a bolt of lightning at the 15th hole, say officials. The unexpected news of Mariani’s passing was announced on Monday, as shared in an obituary posted by the family on the funeral home’s website handling arrangements.
Mariani was taking part in an all-day Iron Man golf competition when the calamitous lightning strike occurred. This incident was witnessed by Brian Delia, a fellow golfer who captured the brewing storm on camera from the 14th hole and sought shelter in the clubhouse once the lightning struck.
Before the arrival of authorities, Mariani’s father, who was his playing partner that fateful day, was reportedly administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, while other golfers provided CPR.
The Hardyston Police Department received a 911 call at approximately 1:53 p.m. that same day. Upon arrival, they “provided care to the victim until paramedics arrived.” Mariani was later airlifted to a hospital for further treatment, as stated by officials last week.
Mariani, described as “driven, dedicated, smart” and “exceptionally talented” in his obituary, was working as an associate at MTS Health Partners in New York City. The tribute also noted his love for his family, his admiration for Taylor Swift, and his champion spirit. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, and “many cherished family members and friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts,” according to his obituary.
