Breitbart reports that Homeland Security Chief KristiNoem has stopped government funding to progressive groups that assist migrants. She cited concerns about taxpayer dollars being “used to facilitate illegal immigration”.

Noem announced the decision during an appearance Wednesday on Fox News’ “The Will Cain Show.” She said the grants were misused to facilitate illegal immigration.

Noem stated, “I find it amazing that the federal government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to send to NGOs to facilitate the invasion of our nation.”

The funding freeze coincides with a heated debate on immigration policy and border safety, two key issues that President Donald Trump promised to address during his campaign.

Noem, an ardent Trump supporter, said that the move was needed to protect taxpayer dollars.

She said, “I’ve taken steps to stop these funds, to reevaluate and make sure we’re using taxpayer dollars in a manner that strengthens our country, that keeps us secure.”

Noem stressed that while the Department of Homeland Security is conducting the review, the administration remains committed to border security and the deportation of those who illegally enter the country.

Noem stated, “We’re not going to spend another dime on the destruction of this nation. We are going to follow through with what President Trump promised, which is to ensure that we secure our borders, that we deport those who are here unlawfully and are committing criminal acts, and that taxpayer dollars are not spent to help this.”

This announcement came after some Democrats claimed that Trump had tried to stop federal spending for essential programs such as education and Social Security. Noem’s action targeted specifically funds that were directed to migrant assistance groups.

Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas) has made it clear that he opposes the use of taxpayer funds to support NGOs helping migrants. Recently, he wrote on the website of his congressional office that these groups exploited their humanitarian standing to encourage illegal migration.

“These organizations, understanding the benefits of NGO status, have been exploiting the humanitarian banner to incentivize illegal immigration across our borders. They receive taxpayer dollars to house, feed, and transport illegal immigrants across the United States. Their services act as a magnet for illegal immigrants looking to enter our country,” Gooden wrote.

He said that when NGOs facilitate illegal border crossings they open up avenues for individuals to exploit, posing a threat to our safety. This practice undermines countless immigrants who have gone through the legal immigration process.

Long has the role of NGOs as an aid to migrants been a controversial issue.

In 2023, certain groups used federal funds to relocate undocumented immigrants across the nation, but the Department of Homeland Security under the Biden administration struggled to track the money spent.
