The resolution to reprimand Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) survived a procedural obstacle late on Wednesday, clearing the way for it to be put up for vote by all members of Congress.

Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) introduced a resolution of censure against the Texas Democrat in the morning amid widespread GOP fury at Democrats for protesting President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress Tuesday.

Democrats wanted a vote on the resolution to be tabled, as this would have killed it. It failed to pass, and the vote is scheduled for this week.

Newhouse was in touch with House GOP Leadership about his resolution after Trump’s speech last night.

There were several resolutions that circulated among House Republicans, but Newhouse appears to have the support of House GOP leaders.

Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters Wednesday morning that he believed it was the first protest. “I think that [Green’s] protest was unprecedented. This was not an exuberant utterance. It was, you know, a planned and prolonged protest.”

After repeatedly interrupting the start of Trump’s address to Congress, the 77-year-old Democrat was removed on Tuesday evening.

He shouted, “You have no mandate!” at Trump as he touted Republican victories in the House, Senate, and White House.

Johnson ordered Green to be removed from the U.S. Army by the Sergeant-at-Arms.

Green was defiant as he spoke with members of the White House Press Pool on the U.S. Capitol’s first floor after he had been thrown from the House Chamber, during which Trump was in the middle of speaking.

“I’m willing to suffer whatever punishment is available to me. I didn’t say to anyone, ‘don’t punish me.’ I’ve said I’ll accept the punishment,” Green said, according to the White House press pool report. “But it’s worth it to let people know that there are some of us who are going to stand up against this president’s desire to cut Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.”

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) has drafted his resolution with the support of more than 30 House Republicans.

Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) is leading a third resolution of censure by the House Freedom Caucus.
