Authorities in Ottawa County, Michigan, have confirmed that a father murdered his wife and their six children before setting fire to their Grand Haven home and taking his own life in what investigators are calling a murder-suicide.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, killed his wife Amanda, 39, and their children, ranging in age from 5 to 15 years old, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain Jake Sparks, who briefed reporters Monday on the investigation’s findings.
First responders discovered the bodies late Friday morning after neighbors reported a house fire at approximately 11:42 a.m. The victims were found in different bedrooms throughout the residence, located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
Autopsies conducted over the weekend confirmed that all eight individuals died from gunshot wounds. The investigation indicates that Karolkiewicz used a registered handgun in the attack, though authorities have not confirmed whether the weapon has been recovered from the fire-damaged home.
“The investigation at this point shows that this is a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” Sparks stated during the news conference. “Preliminary indications are that the fire was intentionally set in numerous different places throughout the residence, in the interior of the home.”
The timeline of this tragedy extends beyond Friday morning. Investigators believe the violence may have begun Thursday evening and continued into Friday, based on earlier reports from area residents who noticed the smell of smoke in the neighborhood.
Four of the children were the biological offspring of Kristopher and Amanda Karolkiewicz, while two 11-year-old girls had been adopted by the couple. Authorities have declined to release the children’s identities at this time.
The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit, along with a state police canine unit, has assisted the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office in processing the scene and gathering evidence.
Amanda Karolkiewicz was known in her community as a substitute teacher, children’s book author, and advocate for special needs children. Grand Haven Area Public Schools had formally recognized her this year as a dedicated substitute teacher who “pours her heart into her work.”
Her parents released a statement describing their daughter as “a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students.” They added, “We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately express our devastation.”
This investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish a complete timeline of events and determine what led to this devastating act of violence against an entire family.
The Grand Haven community, a city of approximately 11,000 residents along Lake Michigan’s shoreline, now faces the difficult task of processing this tragedy and supporting those affected by the loss of eight lives in a single, horrific incident.
