A tragedy unfolded in Billings, Montana, on Sunday evening when a gunman opened fire inside a residential home, killing multiple people including children, before the structure became engulfed in flames. The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Interim Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell confirmed Monday that both adults and juveniles perished in the incident, which authorities have characterized as a family disturbance. The exact number of victims, along with their identities and ages, has not been released as investigators work to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Law enforcement received the initial call at 6:01 p.m. Sunday from a residence in the 300 block of White Star Circle, located near the city’s West End neighborhood. According to authorities, gunshots could be heard clearly during the emergency call itself.
Officers from the Billings Police Department and Yellowstone County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene approximately ten minutes after dispatch. Upon arrival, they reported hearing gunfire emanating from the rear of the residence. Within three minutes of their arrival, the entire home had become fully engulfed in flames.
Video footage from the scene captured law enforcement personnel taking defensive positions behind patrol vehicles as a small tactical team, equipped with handheld shields, advanced toward the burning structure. The rapid progression of events presented extraordinary challenges for first responders attempting to manage both an active shooter situation and a growing fire emergency.
Firefighters responding to the scene encountered significant obstacles in their efforts to combat the blaze. Billings Fire Chief Matt Hoppel acknowledged Monday that crews faced water access difficulties and an insufficient number of fire hydrants in the immediate area.
“The delay and limited access presented significant challenges, fire conditions continued to worsen, and the residents ultimately became consumed by fire,” Chief Hoppel stated during a Monday news conference.
The investigation has been further complicated by the fire itself and the subsequent water damage from firefighting efforts. Sheriff O’Donnell explained that the condition of the crime scene will necessitate a methodical and time-consuming investigation.
“Because of the fire and obviously water that goes to suppress that fire, it’s going to slow our investigation of the crime scene recovery of evidence,” O’Donnell said. “So we ask for patience as we complete this investigation.”
Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the attack. The origin of the fire itself remains under investigation, though the circumstances suggest it may have been deliberately set.
Billings Police Sergeant Jeff Stovall emphasized Monday that certain information must remain confidential to protect the investigative process. “There are details we simply cannot release at this time,” he stated.
The incident represents one of the most significant loss-of-life events in recent Billings history, and the community now faces the difficult task of understanding how such violence could occur within a family setting.
