A Laotian national with an extensive criminal record remains at large after attempting to strike a federal immigration officer with his vehicle during an arrest attempt in Sacramento, California, the Department of Homeland Security announced Monday.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were attempting to apprehend Xa Lee on March 25 when the incident occurred. Lee, who is subject to a standing deportation order issued by a federal immigration judge, was operating a vehicle when officers initiated the stop.

According to DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis, Lee attempted to flee the scene and deliberately tried to strike an ICE officer with his car during the encounter. Officers deployed tasers in response to the threat, but Lee successfully evaded capture and remains a fugitive.

“The officer, thankfully, did not sustain injuries,” Bis stated. “This is just the latest in a disturbing trend of vehicle attacks.”

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about public safety risks posed by individuals who have violated immigration laws and resisted deportation orders. Lee’s case represents a particularly troubling example, given his documented criminal history and his status as a fugitive from federal immigration authorities.

The attack on the ICE officer comes amid heightened tensions over immigration enforcement and border security. Federal immigration officials have expressed growing concern about the dangers their officers face in the field, particularly when attempting to apprehend individuals who have already demonstrated a pattern of criminal behavior and disregard for legal authority.

Vehicle attacks against law enforcement personnel have become an increasingly serious concern for federal authorities. The deliberate use of automobiles as weapons presents unique challenges for officer safety and has resulted in injuries and fatalities in recent years.

Lee’s ability to evade capture despite the deployment of less-lethal force highlights the difficulties immigration enforcement officers encounter during field operations. The incident also raises questions about the resources and support available to ICE agents as they attempt to execute lawful deportation orders.

Federal authorities have not released additional details about Lee’s specific criminal history or the circumstances that led to his deportation order. The Department of Homeland Security continues to seek information regarding Lee’s whereabouts and has urged anyone with knowledge of his location to contact authorities immediately.

The incident in Sacramento adds to a growing list of confrontations between immigration enforcement officers and individuals resisting arrest or deportation. As the debate over immigration policy continues in Washington, such incidents serve as stark reminders of the practical challenges facing those tasked with enforcing the nation’s immigration laws.
