A five-year-old boy is recovering at home after being struck by a stray bullet while riding his bicycle in front of his Detroit residence Tuesday evening, and police have taken a person of interest into custody in connection with the shooting.

The child, identified by his family as Kaizer, was riding near the driveway and sidewalk of his home on Lindsay Street near Trojan Avenue, adjacent to Fargo-Oakfield Park on Detroit’s west side, when gunfire erupted in the neighborhood. The incident occurred without warning, leaving the young boy confused about what had happened.

According to his father, Kaizer initially believed he had been struck by a firework. The father recounted that his son fell to the ground suddenly and began screaming that a firecracker had hit him. In those first chaotic moments, the father struggled to understand what had occurred until he observed blood running down his son’s arm.

Acting swiftly, the father removed his own shirt to apply pressure to the wound and worked to keep his son calm before rushing him to a nearby hospital. Medical personnel treated the boy, and he was released Wednesday afternoon, a remarkably quick recovery given the circumstances.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison addressed the incident during a news conference Tuesday night, describing Kaizer as an innocent bystander caught in what he characterized as a senseless act of violence. The chief indicated that investigators believe the shooter was a masked teenager.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that Detroit police took that teenager into custody Wednesday afternoon. However, the investigation continues as authorities search for at least one additional suspect believed to be involved in the incident. Police have not yet released further details regarding the suspects or potential charges, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The shooting has left the community shaken, particularly given the proximity to a public park where children regularly play. Kaizer’s father expressed both gratitude for his son’s survival and disbelief at the circumstances that led to the shooting.

The father stated his conviction that divine intervention played a role in his son’s survival, calling it a miracle. He also voiced his bewilderment that someone would bring a firearm to a park where innocent children gather to play.

This incident adds to growing concerns about gun violence affecting innocent bystanders in urban communities across the nation. The case remains under active investigation as Detroit police work to bring all responsible parties to justice and determine the circumstances that led to gunfire erupting in a residential neighborhood during evening hours when children were outside.

The swift apprehension of a suspect and the child’s recovery offer some measure of relief to a community grappling with the reality that a young boy nearly lost his life while engaging in the simple childhood activity of riding a bicycle in front of his own home.
