After nearly five years of investigation, federal authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with pipe bombs planted near both the Republican and Democratic national party headquarters in Washington, D.C., on January 5, 2021.

Brian Cole has been identified as the suspect in custody, according to senior law enforcement officials with knowledge of the matter. The arrest, which occurred Thursday morning, represents a significant breakthrough in a case that has challenged investigators since the devices were discovered on the eve of the Capitol siege.

The Justice Department scheduled a news conference for Thursday to formally announce the arrest and provide additional details about the investigation’s conclusion.

Federal investigators have maintained that an individual placed one pipe bomb near the Democratic National Committee headquarters and another near the Republican National Committee headquarters during the evening hours of January 5, 2021. The devices were discovered approximately 15 hours after their placement, and the FBI has consistently stated that these were viable explosive devices capable of causing serious injury or death to bystanders.

The investigation has been extensive. The bureau conducted more than 1,000 interviews and reviewed tens of thousands of video files in pursuit of the perpetrator. In January, authorities released additional video footage showing the suspect planting one of the bombs. The FBI described the suspect as approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall, wearing Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a distinctive gold logo.

The seriousness with which authorities treated this case became evident in 2023 when the FBI increased the reward for information leading to an arrest from $100,000 to $500,000.

The absence of an arrest in this case had become a source of criticism from lawmakers and had unfortunately provided fertile ground for various conspiracy theories. Some suggested that government entities had orchestrated events to entrap supporters of President Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol. Others circulated unfounded theories about the involvement of law enforcement personnel. Last month, the FBI took the unusual step of publicly debunking a theory that suggested the bombs were planted by a former Capitol Police officer.

Representative Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, who chairs a select subcommittee examining the events of January 6, confirmed Thursday that he had spoken with the FBI that morning. He stated that investigators expressed confidence they had apprehended the correct individual, a male from northern Virginia. Loudermilk indicated he hopes to receive a comprehensive briefing from investigators in the near future.

The resolution of this case removes one of the lingering uncertainties surrounding the events of January 5 and 6, 2021. The placement of explosive devices at the headquarters of both major political parties represented a threat not just to physical safety but to the foundations of the American political system itself.

As this case moves forward through the judicial process, the facts established through years of painstaking investigation will now be tested in court.
