A 22-year-old suspect, identified as Eduardo Roberto Medina Berumen, was charged Tuesday with multiple counts of murder in connection with a violent shooting incident that occurred over the weekend in Southern California’s Baldwin Park. The victims include a resident and a responding police officer.
The details of the incident, as reported by the authorities, indicate that Darius Wong, a 43-year-old father of two, was fatally shot shortly after parking his car on Saturday evening. Responding officers, alerted to a man discharging a rifle, encountered immediate gunfire upon reaching the scene. Officer Samuel Riveros was tragically killed in the exchange. Reports indicate another officer, Anthony Pimentel, was injured by fragments of glass from a shattered windshield.
According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, “When the bullets were flying, [Riveros] ran into those bullets to try and keep his community safe and in doing so, he made the ultimate sacrifice of his life.”

It was reported that a third officer present at the scene remained unharmed. The suspect, Berumen, incurred injuries during the gunfight and is currently in stable condition at a local hospital, as stated by the sheriff.
Authorities recovered an ‘AR-15-style weapon’ along with two high-capacity magazines at the scene. Approximately 40 to 60 spent casings were found nearby, evidence suggesting a chaotic exchange of gunfire.
The motive for the initial shooting remains under investigation. Authorities are also examining whether there was any prior connection between the suspect and Wong. This raises important questions about the circumstances leading to this tragic event.

Charges against Medina Berumen include two counts of murder with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder of a peace officer, along with two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and one count of possession of an assault weapon. The district attorney’s office has yet to schedule his arraignment. If convicted as charged, Berumen could face the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole. A decision on the former will be made after a review process expected to last several months, according to District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
