According to officials, a cable car that was transporting tourists south from Naples on Thursday was destroyed by a snapped cable. Four people were killed and another seriously injured.

The cable cars that were going up and down came to a halt as they crossed Monte Faito in Castellammare di Stabia. Naples Prefect Michele de Bari said the upward cable crashed, causing the deaths and injuries. Eight tourists, including the operator, had to be evacuated from the downward cable car.

Marco De Rosa, the mayor’s spokesperson, is from Vico Equense. Marco De Rosa, the spokesperson for Vico Equense’s mayor, said that the accident killed three tourists, including a British and an Israeli woman.

Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into multiple manslaughter and culpable accidents, among other crimes.

“The traction cable broke. The emergency brake downstream worked, but not the one on the cabin that was entering the station,” said Castellammare Mayor Luigi Vicinanza.

Firefighters, police, and civil protection services, as well as Italy’s alpine rescue, responded to the accident.

The accident occurred just one week after cable cars, popular for their views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, reopened.

Giorgia Meloni, Italian Premier, expressed condolences for the victims and their families and confirmed she was in contact with rescuers. She was in Washington, where she met with U.S. President Donald Trump.

A similar accident occurred in 2021 when a cable snapped near the beautiful lake region of northern Italy. The cable caused a cable car to crash down before it tumbled down an inclined slope.
